Prairie Gates

Joanna Larson
I am the fourth generation of Swedish immigrants stewarding land in the Sheyenne River valley. I raise vegetables (which will soon be Certified Organic), pastured beef, wholesale flowers, and conventional grain. My partner, Ian, works full-time off-farm and also raises pasture hogs, contributing to our diverse and resilient farm.
I hold a B.S. in Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering from NDSU and am currently completing my master’s thesis on women in agricultural cooperatives through the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet). As an engineer, I am always carefully considering the tradeoffs (economic, social, environmental) in all the agricultural systems that I participate in: conventional grain, livestock, horticulture, floriculture, and specifically when it comes to the pasture management.
I am committed to organic methods where they make sense, especially in pasture management, where I see opportunities to improve soil health, water quality, and biodiversity. The pasture and vegetable operations are currently transitioning to organic, with certification expected for some areas as early as next spring. My goal isn’t to farm more acres, but to use agriculture on my farm in a way that is better, not bigger.
