Financing the Future of Local Food

Lori Martin | Roving Donkey Farm

April 20, 2026

As a chef by trade, Lori Martin has always had a calling to feed her community. That passion inspired her and her husband, Kevin, to start Roving Donkey Farm in 2012 with the goal of bringing high-quality vegetables to the Bismarck community.

Like many small farmers, the Martins quickly discovered that expanding a farm requires significant investment in infrastructure and equipment, yet access to traditional financing can be difficult for smaller-scale producers. “Due to a lack of access to traditional financing and a desire to go into as little debt as possible, we faced significant challenges in expanding our farming operation,” Lori shared.

While enrolled as a Farm Beginnings student, Lori learned about the FARRMS loan program, which supports beginning and small-scale farmers who want to grow their businesses and strengthen local food systems. In 2013, the Martins were awarded a FARRMS loan that became the catalyst for their farm’s growth. Contrasting her experience with traditional lending, FARRMS made the daunting task of applying for financing feel attainable. Recalling the application process, she states, “Applying for the loan was moderately painless. I filled out the application, came up with a budget and presented it to the finance committee. After going to a bank for our home mortgage and how complex that process was, I appreciated FARRMS’ understanding of what I was doing and not expecting me to be a business genius.”

That same season, Roving Donkey Farm also received an NRCS EQIP grant to install a high tunnel, an investment that extended their growing season and protected crops from pests and weather extremes. However, because EQIP is a reimbursement program, the Martins needed financing to cover the upfront costs. “Without adequate financial assistance, we struggled to make progress, even after obtaining an NRCS EQIP grant,” Lori said. “FARRMS provided us with the opportunity we needed to realize our vision. With the loan from FARRMS, we were able to purchase a high tunnel, a vital asset that has revolutionized our farming practices.”

After receiving their EQIP reimbursement, the Martins reinvested in their farm by purchasing a greenhouse, tools, and equipment that improved efficiency and sustainability. “Thanks to FARRMS, we've been able to transform our farming operation into a more sustainable and profitable venture,” Lori reflected. “Their support has empowered us to overcome financial barriers and pursue our passion for agriculture with confidence. We are immensely grateful for the invaluable assistance provided by FARRMS.”

Roving Donkey Farm primarily grows vegetables but also incorporates fruit, plants, and value-added products. Over the years, the Martins have tried several marketing channels, from farmers markets and CSA shares to restaurant and direct sales, adapting as their family and farm goals evolve. Today, they primarily market to Bismarck Public Schools, proudly supplying fresh, locally grown produce to students in the area.

Beyond farming, Lori has given back by serving on boards, speaking in Farm Dreams and Farm Beginnings, and mentoring new farmers. “It’s a hard job, often lonely and heartbreaking, but almost always fulfilling,” she reflected. “Our food may not always look perfect, no two carrots look alike, but they taste amazing anyhow. We take great pride in growing nutritious, safe food for you.”
